EDCUTAH Will Hold its Annual Meeting; Guest Speaker Steve
Forbes
|
As we close out our fiscal year, it’s good to look back to
consider what has been accomplished and, perhaps more
importantly, look forward to what can and should be done
in the coming year. Currently, Utah’s economy is strong,
with recent reports showing one of our lowest unemployment
rates in recent memory. To that end, I invite you to join
us at EDCUTAH’s Annual Meeting on Wednesday, August 30.
Today’s feature article provides more information about
our Annual Meeting and a glimpse at the meeting’s special
guest speaker, Mr. Steve Forbes.
Today’s Economic Review also includes links to many of the
ED-related news stories from the past week. As always, if
you have comments, suggestions or topics you’d like to see
in the Economic Review, please contact us by clicking the
“Comments” link at the bottom of this page.
Enjoy!

EDCUTAH's Annual Meeting Slated
Steve Forbes Guest Speaker
The Economic Development Corporation of Utah will host its
annual meeting Wednesday, August 30 at 8:00 a.m. in the
Radisson Hotel - Wasatch Ballroom, 215 West South Temple,
Salt
Lake City.
In addition to the nomination and election of
the Board and Executive Committee, a report on the
activities of the corporation will be presented. The
highlight of the meeting will certainly be special guest
speaker Steve Forbes, president and CEO of Forbes, Inc.
and editor in chief of Forbes Magazine.
An influential pro-growth advocate and lauded economic
forecaster, Steve Forbes is one of the most highly
respected businessmen of our time. In his speech, Forbes
will address the power and importance of the flat tax and
its impact upon economic development.
Tickets to this event are $25 for EDCUTAH investors and
$30 for non-investors. Tickets must be purchased in
advance. Interested parties should contact Trina Stanley,
801-323-4251, by Aug. 25. Email:
tstanley@edcutah.org.
Forbes is a widely respected economic prognosticator and
the only writer to have won the highly prestigious Crystal
Owl Award four times. The prize was formerly given by U.S.
Steel Corporation to the financial journalist whose
economic forecasts for the coming year proved most
accurate. He is the author of the recently published Flat
Tax Revolution: Using a Postcard to Abolish the IRS
(Regnery, 2005), and also wrote A New Birth of Freedom
(Regnery, 1999), heralded as a book of bold ideas for the
new millennium.
In 1996 and 2000 Forbes campaigned for the Republican
nomination for the Presidency. Key to his platform were a
flat tax, medical savings accounts, a new Social Security
system for working Americans, parental choice of schools
for their children, term limits and a strong national
defense—an agenda which he continues to energetically
promote today.
In 1985, President Reagan named Forbes chairman of the
bi-partisan Board for International Broadcasting (BIB). In
this position, he oversaw the operation of Radio Free
Europe and Radio Liberty. Broadcasting behind the Iron
Curtain, Radio Free Europe and Radio Liberty were praised
by Poland's Lech Walesa as being critical to the struggle
against communism. Forbes was reappointed to his post by
President George H. W. Bush and served until 1993.
Steve Forbes was born on July 18, 1947, in Morristown, New
Jersey. He graduated cum laude in 1966 from Brooks School
in North Andover, Massachusetts. He received a B.A. in
history from Princeton in 1970. At Princeton, he was the
founding editor of Business Today, which became the
country's largest magazine published by students for
students, with a circulation of 200,000. The magazine
continues to be published today by Princeton
undergraduates.
'Michelangelo of Commercialization'
USTAR Chairman Dinesh Patel Featured in
Deseret Morning News Story

His eyes widen, his head tilts just a bit and he lets
loose with a giant exhale as he leans back in his chair.
Dinesh C. Patel seems to have trouble grasping the
enormity of the question.
Sure, he's often called a businessman, entrepreneur,
investor and philanthropist. But what about those other
descriptions, such as "the father of biotechnology and
pharmaceuticals in the Mountain West region"?
Terrence Chatwin, director of the Utah Engineering
Experiment Station, said it just as succinctly this
spring. "He is," Chatwin said, "the Michelangelo of
commercialization." (

under one roof and increase output capacity. Hunter
Douglas officials anticipate that operations at the new
plant will create approximately 250 new jobs, bringing the
total number of Hunter Douglas employees in the area to
